Are All Solar Thermal Collectors Created Equal?

srccThe KU Solar Thermal Performance Advantage

SRCC (Solar Rating and Certification Corporation) provides a standardized comparisons of solar thermal products. Solar thermal collectors are certified as OG 100, using SRCC Standard 100 by an independent laboratory accredited by SRCC. The OG 100 certification of collector is required in order to utilize the Federal Investment Tax Credit and payment of incentives in many states. There are two types of solar thermal collectors available on the market, evacuated tubes and flat plate. Which is better for a specific application is a topic of great debate. The consensus opinion is evacuated tubes produce more heat, under varying conditions than flat plate collectors.

KU Solar's Sky Pro CPC 1800 solar thermal collector evacuated tube product line, which is OG 100 certified, produces more BTUs/ft² than other evacuated tube and flat plate collectors. An analysis of SRCC published performance information "Clear C (kBtu/Day) per panel" rating for collectors illustrates the Sky Pro CPC 1800 product line produces more BTU/ft² then other collectors. Aperture area collector efficiency represents the percentage of sunlight converted to heat. The high energy production is created by the Sky Pro CPC 1800 collector's use of a compound parabolic concentrator, which efficiently diffuses the sun's irradiation, the aperture of the evacuated tube which is coated with a high performance selective coating, CERMET. This increase energy production capability, BTUs/ft², results in a better Return on Investment (ROI) in applications.
