- Founded in 1995 with roughly $300K investment, BYD was listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2002 and hold a revenue of 7.1 Billion USD last year.
BYD has 13 manufacturing campuses globally, with customer service centers in Chicago, San Jose, Rotterdam, Espoo, Ulm, Copenhagen, and Yokohama.
BYD is also the first chinese company that wins the investment from Warren Buffett.
BYD is involved in three core business areas: New Energy, IT and Auto.
For New Energy, we have four main targets in this area:
The first target is Home Energy System:
We put solar panels on roofs, add batteries to store the electricity generated by these solar panels, and offer energy efficient LED lighting – all to achieve zero CO2 emissions for single family.
As a significant part of Home Energy System, BYD Island Home/Village Energy Solution is specially designed for off-grid areas, with BYD Fe battery and PV panels. We use clean and green energy to light all the remote inland, isolated islands, border checkpoints and so on.
The 2nd target is Battery Energy Storage Stations:
We link large Mega-Watt rechargeable batteries to the grid to store night-time electricity for deployment during peak time the next day when demand is high.
The 3rd target is Solar Stations using BYD's unique technology to produce low-cost electricity which can compete with Diesel-generation Peaker plants and next coal fired plants without incentives from the government.
The last target is BYD UPS/DC Power. We supply continuous high-quality AC power that is isolated from utility power for mission-critical equipments.
The New Energy business will be our biggest growth area in the near future.
Our IT manufacturing strategy is to offer ODM services for consumer electronics such as cell phones and laptops. We offer vertical integration—”VI”—services for the vast majority of the cell phone industry now (one third of the mechanical parts in Nokia’s phones are made by BYD).
We have very strong vertical integration capabilities -- manufacturing most of mechanical parts and electro-mechanical parts of the phone.
We entered the Auto industry in 2003, and our F3, compact car, is now the top selling model in China! (over Ford, GM, Volkswagen, etc.)
We were the first in the world to launch a Dual-Mode Car (Plug-in Hybrid EV) at the end of 2008
In the next year, we will be the first in the world to launch a mass-producible, pure-battery-operated Electric Family Car (the e6 – a 5-seater EV with a driving range of 240-300km on a single charge).
We have two goals for the Auto industry;
One is to be the market share leader in China by 2015.
And second, to be the largest auto manufacturer in the world by 2025.
